The Young Democrats of Massachusetts Women’s Caucus and Merrimack Valley Young Democrats will present Rep. Niki Tsongas with the True Blue Women’s Advocate of the Year Award at their upcoming Women’s History Month event, Ladies in Blue. The event will take place on March 22, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Lowell BeerWorks in Lowell.
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Tsongas recently secured a commitment from Defense Secretary Robert Gates to investigate Pentagon resistance to allowing victims’ of sexual assault in the military to have confidential conversations with their attorneys and victims’ advocates. She also recently voted to prevent defunding of Planned Parenthood and Title X programs and has a 100 percent rating from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL.
Tsongas has also co-sponsored bills that would address the fact that in the U.S., women make only 78 centers for every dollar earned for similar work by their male counterparts. She has also co-sponsored the Healthy Families Act which would allow Americans to earn paid sick time so they can address their health needs and those of their families.
There is a $10 suggested donation for this event, which will go to benefit the Young Democrats of Massachusetts and the Merrimack Valley Young Democrats, so they can continue their work to empower women through the YDM Women’s Caucus and to support youth participation in the Democratic Party in the Commonwealth. Larger contributions will allow us to have an even greater impact and will be greatly appreciated.
The Young Democrats of Massachusetts is a partisan political organization with more than 1,000 members across the commonwealth, YDM mobilizes to create positive change in the causes and for the candidates that reflect the values of its members.
