Eldridge receives Young Democrats’ Endorsement

Organization pledges ground and financial support in re-election campaign

BOSTON – The Young Democrats of Massachusetts (YDM) is proud to announce its endorsement of fellow Young Democrat and Democratic State Senator Jamie Eldridge.

"I am proud to earn the endorsement of YDM.  I have spent my career championing issues important to young people, and it means a lot that our current and future young leaders recognize this track record.  The enthusiasm and energy YDM will bring to my campaign will help me connect with voters all across my district,” Eldridge said.

Eldridge, whose entire full-time campaign staff is made up of young Democrats, is a strong independent leader who has worked to increase transparency and accountability in government.  Among his accomplishments, Eldridge led the fight to hold corporations accountable for the tax breaks they receive from the state and to reduce the influence of corporate money in Massachusetts politics. He was named Legislator of the Year by the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters and has worked to create green jobs to spur economic development.

“Eldridge has supported education aid for all communities, supports further reforms and innovations to bring our public school system in to the 21st century, and has stood with young Democrats on many important initiatives in affordable housing, healthcare, job creation, and civil rights,” said Elaine Almquist, vice chair of the Young Democrats of Massachusetts.  “YDM is proud to stand with legislators who take the lead on progressive priorities, and we are excited to help re-elect Senator Eldridge.”

Jamie Eldridge has served as State Senator since January, 2009 and represents Marlborough, Acton, Ayer, Boxborough, Hudson, Littleton, Maynard, Shirley, Stow and Sudbury (precincts 2, 3 and 5) in the county of Middlesex; and Harvard, Northborough (precinct 3), Southborough, and Westborough, in the county of Worcester.

Previously, Eldridge served as State Representative for the 37th Middlesex district, the only Clean Elections candidate elected to public office in Massachusetts history in November 2002.  Jamie is known for his leadership and independence on behalf of his constituents.

Prior to his election as State Representative, Jamie worked as a public interest attorney with Merrimack Valley Legal Services in Lowell, a non-profit organization providing free legal services to the poor and the elderly.  As a public interest lawyer, he worked to help low-income residents deal with issues of housing, Social Security, disability, and unemployment.

Jamie received a National Equal Justice Works fellowship to help low- and moderate-income people buy their first home, start a business, or create a non-profit to create change in their neighborhood.

A lifelong Acton resident, Jamie is a product of Acton’s public schools, graduating from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in 1991.  Jamie’s commitment to public service was on display at an early age as he co-founded the high school’s community service organization, Acton Boxborough Community Outreach (ABCO).

The Young Democrats of Massachusetts is a partisan political organization with over seventeen hundred members mobilized to create positive change across the Commonwealth.  Our members are the leaders of today: Democrats under the age of 36 committed to getting Democrats elected and promoting progressive legislation.  We are the future: now.
